Situation

Mine was experiencing excessive downtime and high maintenance costs.

Problems

After comparing the number of drill repairs to the actual footage drilled, it was determined that the actual service life, between service intervals- 700 feet, was far below industry norms. This resulted in poor productivity and many unhappy miners.

Solutions

The following processes were implemented:

• Provide the drill doctor with adequate training.
• Implemented a tracking system that would identify why drills came out of service.
• After identifying the main reasons the drills were removed from service, action plans were made to address those problems.
